Viewing Image Help

The Viewing Images Help Section is designed to aid as a general guide to the public when issues arise while attempting to view images on GSCCCA website. This guide assumes that the user is able to search but cannot view images.

Why can't I view images? I can see only thumbnails on the left-hand side, a blank screen or an error message instead of an image.
There are multiple reasons why this may occur:
- You are not using a supported browser or operating system.
- You do not have the required Java Software installed on your computer.
- Your Java version is out-of-date.
- The Java Plug-in\Add-on is not enabled or activated in your browser.
- Settings in your browser are preventing Java from running.
- Security settings on your computer or network are preventing Java from running.
- You have not accepted the Acordex prompt.
What browsers and platforms are currently recommended by GSCCCA for image viewing?
- On Windows, we recommend using the Internet Explorer browser version 9 or higher or the latest version of the Mozilla Firefox browser.
- On an apple computer running OSX, we recommend using the latest version of the Mozilla Firefox browser.
- On mobile devices image viewing is currently not supported. Our premium account subscribers have access to the GSCCCA Mobile Map Search application on iOS and Android.
While using Google Chrome I get a message "This plugin is not supported". How can I view images?
As of September 1st 2015, Google Chrome has discontinued support of Java as currently implemented. Workarounds are no longer supported. Please use either Internet Explorer 8 or higher or Mozilla Firefox on a computer running Windows.
While using Microsoft Edge in Windows 10, I get a blank screen when attempting to view images.
The Microsoft Edge browser does not support plug-ins and therefore will not run Java. Please switch to either Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer 11. Internet Explorer 11 may need to be pinned to the Start Screen or the taskbar.
What software should I install on my computer in order to view images?
We recommend the latest Java. Java is software that can be downloaded free of charge by navigating to www.java.com and then clicking the Free Java Download button.
I have Java installed but my browser is telling me it is out-of-date. Do I have to update Java?
If you do not regularly update Java with newer versions and updates, Java can be automatically disabled by the browser itself. To remove this message update Java to the latest version. Additionally, our recommendateion is that you uninstall older versions of Java first prior to installing or upgrading to the current version. The preferred method of uninstalling Java is to manually uninstall it by carefully following these directions. A subsequent reboot of the computer may be necessary. Also, the Java Uninstall Tool may be of use. To reinstall Java navigate to www.java.com and then click the Free Java Download button.
I have installed the latest Java version but I still cannot view images.
First verify that your browser supports Java. Next, Java may not be enabled within your browser. Follow the instruction below to enable Java within your specific browser.
- Internet Explorer: If Java has been recently been (re)installed then the Java Plug-in may be enabled by clicking "Enable" in the Java Pop-up Notification at the bottom of Internet Explorer directly above the taskbar.
  Alternatively, the Java Plug-in may be manually enabled by:
  1. Open the Internet Explorer browser or restart it, if it is already running.
  2. From the Internet Explorer menu, select Tools or click the Tools Button . If the tools drop-down menu is not visible, tap the Alt key.
  3. Click the Manage add-ons option.
  4. Under Show, click All add-ons.
  5. Directly below Oracle America, Inc. on the list, check that the status of each add-on is Enabled. For each add-on with a Disabled status, click the add-on, and then click Enable.
  6. Once all the add-ons for Oracle are Enabled click Close.
- Mozilla Firefox: If Java has been recently been (re)installed then the Java Add-on may be activated by clicking "Active Java." that appears after clicking the "View Image" button. "Allow and Remember" would then need to be clicked.
  Alternatively, the Java Add-on may be manually activated by:
  1. Open the Firefox browser or restart it, if it is already running.
  2. From the Firefox menu, select Tools or click the Menu Button , then click the Add-ons option. If the tools drop-down menu is not visible, tap the Alt key.
  3. In the Add-ons Manager window, select Plugins.
  4. Click Java (TM) Platform Plug-in (Windows) or Java Applet Plug-in (Mac OS X) to select it.
  5. Check that the option selected is Ask to Activate or Always Activate or on older Firefox versions, click on the Enable button (if the button says Disable, Java is already enabled).
I am using Internet Explorer and I have enabled the latest Java version but I still cannot view images.
There are several settings that may be the cause.
- Security Settings. To restore all security levels to their original settings:
  1. From the Internet Explorer menu, select Tools or click the Tools Button . If the tools drop-down menu is not visible, tap the Alt key.
  2. Click Internet options.
  3. Click the Security tab.
  4. Click the Reset all zones to default level button.
  5. Click Apply and then Okay.
- Pop-up Blocker Settings. To add the GSCCCA website to the Pop-up Blocker exceptions:
  1. From the same Internet options window as above, click the Privacy tab.
  2. Click Settings only if Turn on Pop-up Blocker is checked.
  3. In the text box below Address of website to allow: type "*.gsccca.org".
  4. Click Add and then Close. Finally click Okay.
I have attempted the above troubleshooting steps but nothing happens when I click the View Image button.
Security settings on your computer or network may be preventing Java from running. Occasionally different firewalls, antivirus products, and spam blockers may interfere with Java. If you suspect this is happening then you may need contact the corresponding software or hardware vendor. For those on a corporate network you may need to contact your company IT department.
When I click the View Image button I receive a prompt that ask "Do you want to run this application?"
Acordex ViewTIFF is the Java Applet that displays images on the GSCCCA website.
- If you receive the prompt below click "Do not show this again..." then click Run.
- After viewing another image you may receive a Security Warning prompt near the taskbar that ask "Allow access to the following application from this website?" Click "Do not show this again..." then click Allow.
